Lessons from the first three years of building Ender — why pilot customers make or break a company, why the team stayed technical, and what it means to become the operating system for real estate.

Jonathan Lonsdale, CEO of Ender, discussed key entrepreneurial lessons with investors at Unanimous VC. He emphasized that "most of running a company is doing the simple, hard things" and stressed the importance of selecting pilot customers carefully, as they "make or break a company."

Regarding team building, Lonsdale highlighted Ender's distinctive approach. Rather than prioritizing sales staff, the company maintained a balanced technical team. He noted the organization values people "capable of arguing any side of a debate" and those demonstrating self-awareness. The founding team relocated to Austin in 2019 and maintained their original ~30-person headcount after three years.

Looking ahead five years, Lonsdale envisions Ender as "the operating system for real estate," functioning as a central hub where applications integrate and data flows seamlessly. He acknowledges real estate involves roughly a dozen horizontal workflows with various configurations, but maintains that continuous improvement opportunities exist, making the mission engaging.
